Dirty Water

Performed by The Standells

Leave it to Bostonians to take a song that maligns their city and turn it into a sports anthem.  Yes, the River Charles was extremely dirty in the ’60s when the Standells performed their hit, and it wasn’t until the 90’s that true remediation efforts were underway, with Governor William Weld pledging to have swimmable water by 2005 by plunging into the waters himself. In 2007 the first swimming race was run and by 2013 the Charles was declared safe to swim in, as long as it was monitored.
